Laura Resau and Maria Virginia Farinango worked together to compile a great story based off of Virginia's personal life story. She was born in Ecuador to very poor farming parents. She dreams of being a famous business woman one day until she is sold to a family in a wealthier part of the country as a live-in maid. Being beaten and abused are just some of the challenges that Virginia faces while growing up. She finally breaks free from the abusive family and makes her way to a neighboring town, pursuing her dreams of an education. Can she finally break down the barriers between the mestizos (wealthy) and indigenas (poor natives) as she finds her own happiness?
I know that isn't the greatest book review you've ever read, but trust me when I say that this book is worth the read. Virginia's story is very interesting and well told. It's hard to imagine that one little girl could come out of such adversity and become the great woman that she is today. The book incorporates the Spanish language and a native tongue called Quichua beautifully. There is a translative section in the back of the book so the reader can look up anything they don't understand. Read it when you get a chance. You won't regret it!
